The score for The Penny is a dream for composers who love to create complex textures with their orchestral/electronic scores.
The challenge with this score was in giving the film a musical signature that went beyond creating a standard drone-type sound, instead adding elements that are melodic and establish and re-use themes for the different characters and how they interact in the story.
A significant amount of time went into the selection of appropriate synth sounds and rhythmic elements. The final sound needed to be unique and support the film well.
Scoring elements used are acoustic orchestral, with a distinct aspect of electronic elements. There is also the use of a good measure of guitars, along with piano pieces.
Common in film scores is the use and re-use of themes. This was done with the score for The Penny in a subtle way. The story is about six lifes and how they finally interact, so different aspects of those lifes needed to be shown in the score, while keeping it interesting.
